The Vessel
Commissioned by Empresa de Pesca de Viana (a Portuguese fishing company of Viana do Castelo), “Santa Maria Manuela” was built by CUF shipyards in Lisbon, in a record time of 62 working days.
With 68,64m in length overall, she regularly sets 11 fore-and-aft sails with a total area of 1,130m2 having also mechanical propulsion of 746kW (1,010hp).
The steel used in her building is of very high quality as it was meant to be used to built 2 man-of-war but, finally, it was used for the hulls of “Santa Maria Manuela” and “Creoula”.
During her long life as a fishing vessel, “Santa Maria Manuela” lost a lot of her typical particulars common to all the tall ships of the beginning of XX century, and, mainly from the sailing vessels of traditional Portuguese building. By owner’s will, her rebuilding was mostly focused in the reconstitution, although under nowadays way, of those distinctive details.
