Fronteiras XXI "Mais mar do que terra"
Last night the Santa Maria Manuela was host venue for the Fronteiras XXI "Mais mar do que terra" program on the future of our oceans. A partnership between RTP and Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation, the program explored how Portugal can make better use of its maritime area, the opportunities it presents for the economy and whether economic development is compatible with the protection of ecosystems.
Presented by RTP journalist Ana Lourenço, guest speakers included the scientific coordinator and administrator of the Oceano Azul Foundation Emanuel Gonçalves, the president of the Port and Logistics Community of Sines Jorge d'Almeida, the specialist in aquaculture and algae biotechnology Helena Abreu and the researcher at the Center for Marine Sciences at the University of Algarve Rui Santos.
The program opened with an exclusive interview with the marine biologist and explorer Sylvia Earle and also featured professor of Environmental and Resource Economics Christopher Costello and the researcher specialised in deep-sea exploration and founder of the ecotourism company Naturalist José Nuno Gomes Pereira.
