Weather conditions

In August, you can expect warm and pleasant weather in the Azores, with daytime temperatures ranging from 22-27°C. The prevailing northwesterly winds provide excellent conditions for smooth sailing. Evenings are cooler, and a light jacket will be useful for enjoying the fresh ocean air and stargazing on deck.

Voyage description

Our past Azores voyages have been so well received that we’re returning with some similar itineraries, sailing between the islands of this volcanic mid-Atlantic archipelago. Distances are short, giving us time to explore on land and enjoy at least one full day of sailing.

We start and end in Terceira. If conditions allow, we’ll drift in quiet bays around the central islands and sail through the São Jorge Channel, a good place for whale watching. Sperm whales are common, along with blue, fin and sei whales. Bottlenose, spotted and common dolphins are also frequently seen at this time of year.

Graciosa Island, known as the “White Island,” welcomes us with gentle hills and whitewashed villages. Swim in the clear waters or hike up to Caldeira da Graciosa for views of the crater and the Furna do Enxofre, a volcanic cave with an underground lake.

In Faial, we stop at Horta to visit the famous Peter’s Café Sport, a landmark for sailors since 1918. Take a walk along the marina and see the painted murals left by passing crews.

We end anchored in Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira – a UNESCO World Heritage city with a Renaissance centre and 16th-century fort. After disembarking, consider visiting the Algar do Carvão or relaxing in the lava-rock pools of Biscoitos.

I won't forget the long-suffering patient crew member who taught me to tie a double bowline. It took ages but I finally got it, and was able to teach another passenger.

Plein de moments magiques pendant le voyage. C'était impressionnant de voir le bateau depuis le zodiac quand on se trouvait à environ 50 ou 100 m du navire. Super la baignade en pleine mer.
