Weather conditions

By mid-March, the western Mediterranean begins to warm slightly, with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 16 to 20°C. There’s still a chance of occasional spring showers, but sunnier days become more frequent. Winds remain generally favorable for sailing, especially in open waters between the Balearics and Sardinia. Evenings can still be cool, so warm layers are recommended.

Voyage description

Join the Santa Maria Manuela for a 5-day sailing voyage across the western Mediterranean, travelling from Palma de Mallorca, on Spain’s Balearic Islands, to Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia. This hands-on journey is ideal for travelers looking to experience life at sea aboard a historic Portuguese tall ship.

We depart from Palma, known for its impressive cathedral, historic old town, and lively harbour. After leaving the port, the Santa Maria Manuela heads southeast into open waters. Along the way, you'll be invited to take part in the sailing experience—hoisting sails, taking the helm, or joining lookout duty—under the guidance of our professional crew. No prior sailing experience is needed.

The days at sea offer a mix of activity and downtime: help sail the ship, enjoy quiet evenings on deck, and connect with fellow travelers. Expect wide sea views, early morning light over the horizon, and time to disconnect from everyday routines.
We arrive in Cagliari, a city framed by hills and coastal lagoons, with a rich history and a bustling marina. It’s the perfect end point for a voyage that combines seamanship, discovery, and the simple rhythm of life at sea.

Whether you’re here to learn, relax, or try something new, this is a unique way to explore the Mediterranean.

VIEW CABINS

*Travellers must be between 14 and 80 years old on the date of sailing to be eligible for the trip.

  • Santa Cruz de La Palma, the capital of the island of La Palma, is a charming city with a rich historical and cultural heritage. Its cobbled streets, lined with colonial buildings featuring wooden balconies, invite a leisurely stroll through the historic center, where Plaza de España and the Church of El Salvador are must-see landmarks. The city's port was a strategic point during the age of exploration, and its replica of a Spanish galleon, the Barco de la Virgen, pays tribute to this maritime history.

The local cuisine includes delights like almendrados (almond cookies) and fresh seafood dishes typical of the region. The city is an excellent base for exploring La Palma's volcanic landscapes and hiking trails, as the island is known as the "Isla Bonita." Combining tranquility, culture, and nature, Santa Cruz de La Palma is the perfect destination for those seeking an authentic Canary Islands experience.

  • Cagliari, the sunlit capital of Sardinia, blends sea views, ancient history, and the relaxed rhythm of island life. Built across several hills and facing the Gulf of Angels, the city invites you to explore cobbled streets, discover Roman ruins, and enjoy beaches just a short distance from the centre.

At the top, the historic Castello district offers narrow alleys, old stone buildings, and viewpoints with wide views over the city and the coastline. Further down, the Marina and Stampace neighbourhoods are home to cafés, local shops, and traditional piazzas.

Cagliari’s long history can be seen throughout the city, from the Roman amphitheatre carved into the rock to baroque churches and noble palaces. For those who enjoy nature, Molentargius Park is a peaceful place where flamingos nest, and Poetto Beach stretches for several kilometres, ideal for swimming or an afternoon walk.

Whether for its heritage, local food, or coastline, Cagliari offers an authentic and calm experience of Sardinia.

The first time we helped the crew put up the sails was magical.

I won't forget the long-suffering patient crew member who taught me to tie a double bowline. It took ages but I finally got it, and was able to teach another passenger.

Plein de moments magiques pendant le voyage. C'était impressionnant de voir le bateau depuis le zodiac quand on se trouvait à environ 50 ou 100 m du navire. Super la baignade en pleine mer.
