Voyage description

This unforgettable voyage begins in Bordeaux, where the excitement of Bordeaux Fête du Vin is still filling the waterfront with music, celebration, and the aromas of the region's world-famous wines. We recommend arriving a few days early to fully enjoy the festival before stepping aboard the Santa Maria Manuela.

As the fleet departs Bordeaux, you'll join one of the most spectacular sights in the sailing world. Accompanied by some of the world's finest tall ships, we motor down the River Garonne and into the Atlantic, where the start of the Tall Ships Race unfolds around us. The atmosphere is electric as crews and ships from many nations set course across the notorious Bay of Biscay.

While not taking part in the race, life on board offers the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. Guests can help handle sails, steer the ship, and learn traditional seamanship, or simply enjoy the experience from the deck. Climb the mast for breathtaking views of the fleet, sit on the bowsprit as the ship cuts through the waves, and share stories, laughter, and unforgettable moments with fellow shipmates.

After our Biscay crossing, we make landfall in Coruña, arriving amidst the celebrations of the city's Tall Ships Festival. The harbour comes alive with visiting vessels, cultural events, music, and maritime festivities. Consider extending your stay to explore the city, visit the remarkable Tower of Hercules—the world's oldest functioning lighthouse and a UNESCO World Heritage Site—or simply enjoy Galicia's renowned seafood and welcoming atmosphere.

Whether you are drawn by the tall ships, the sailing, or the festivals at either end of the voyage, this passage offers a rare opportunity to become part of a truly international maritime celebration.

  • Bordeaux, set along the banks of the Garonne River in southwestern France, is a city where elegant architecture, renowned wines, and French art de vivre come together. During the Fête du Vin, the city takes on a particularly festive atmosphere as the waterfront is filled with wine tastings, cultural events, and celebrations that showcase the region’s rich winemaking heritage. Strolling through the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reveals grand squares, impressive landmarks, and lively cafés at every turn.

Beyond the city’s historic streets, Bordeaux is the gateway to some of the world’s most celebrated vineyards, including Médoc, Saint-Émilion, and Graves. Whether discovering exceptional wines, enjoying the riverside setting, or experiencing the unique spirit of the Fête du Vin, Bordeaux is an unforgettable destination for lovers of culture, gastronomy, and fine wine.

The first time we helped the crew put up the sails was magical.

I won't forget the long-suffering patient crew member who taught me to tie a double bowline. It took ages but I finally got it, and was able to teach another passenger.

Plein de moments magiques pendant le voyage. C'était impressionnant de voir le bateau depuis le zodiac quand on se trouvait à environ 50 ou 100 m du navire. Super la baignade en pleine mer.
