Weather conditions

August is one of the warmest months in the Azores, with daytime temperatures typically around 24–26°C and mild evenings. Expect a mix of sunshine and cloud, with occasional showers. It can feel cooler on deck, especially during the passage from São Miguel to Horta, so bring a light layer and a waterproof jacket alongside your swimwear and sunscreen. Wind and sea conditions can vary, and we will adapt our sailing plans accordingly.

Voyage description

Spend five days discovering the Azores aboard the Santa Maria Manuela, sailing from São Miguel to Horta before continuing to Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira. This voyage combines an open-water passage with time to explore ashore and enjoy the company of fellow guests.

We begin in São Miguel, the largest island in the archipelago. Consider arriving a few days early to explore the crater lakes of Sete Cidades, visit Furnas or try some of the island’s local specialities.

From São Miguel, we set course for the port of Horta. This is the longer passage of our voyage, with time to settle into life aboard. Help the crew handle the sails, learn a few knots or find a comfortable spot on deck and watch the ocean. Keep an eye out for whales and dolphins, which may accompany us along the way.

In Horta, on the island of Faial, we pause to explore a town with a long connection to Atlantic sailing. Walk along the marina, where generations of visiting crews have left painted murals, and stop at Peter Café Sport to soak up the atmosphere. Depending on our time in port, you may also choose to explore more of the island.

The final leg takes us to Terceira, with another opportunity to enjoy sailing and life aboard before arriving in Angra do Heroísmo. Our voyage ends in this UNESCO World Heritage city, where colourful streets, historic squares and waterfront cafés invite you to linger. Stay a little longer to explore the island’s countryside or enjoy a swim in the natural pools at Biscoitos.

Throughout the voyage, our route and time ashore will depend on wind and sea conditions.

The first time we helped the crew put up the sails was magical.

I won't forget the long-suffering patient crew member who taught me to tie a double bowline. It took ages but I finally got it, and was able to teach another passenger.

Plein de moments magiques pendant le voyage. C'était impressionnant de voir le bateau depuis le zodiac quand on se trouvait à environ 50 ou 100 m du navire. Super la baignade en pleine mer.
