Weather conditions

Late August and early September generally bring warm days and mild evenings to the Azores, with typical daytime highs around 24–26°C. There is still plenty of summer warmth, but sunshine can give way to cloud and showers. Out at sea, the breeze can make it feel cooler, particularly at night, so bring layers and a lightweight waterproof jacket. Wind and sea conditions vary, and our sailing plans will take these into account.

Voyage description

Discover four islands of the Azores on a voyage that combines time ashore with the pleasure of sailing aboard the Santa Maria Manuela. From Terceira, we sail to Graciosa and Horta before making the longer passage to São Miguel, enjoying the changing landscapes of this volcanic Atlantic archipelago.

Our journey begins in Terceira. Arrive early to explore Angra do Heroísmo, a UNESCO World Heritage city with colourful streets, historic buildings and a waterfront shaped by centuries of maritime history.

Our first stop is Graciosa, known as the “White Island”, where gentle hills and whitewashed villages invite you to slow down and explore. Head to the Caldeira and visit Furna do Enxofre, a volcanic cave with an underground lake, or enjoy a swim in the island’s natural bathing pools, conditions permitting.

We then sail to Horta, on Faial, a favourite meeting place for sailors crossing the Atlantic. Take a stroll along the marina to admire the murals left by visiting crews, explore the town or stop for a drink at the famous Peter Café Sport.

From Horta, we set course for São Miguel. This longer passage offers time to settle into life at sea, join the crew in handling the sails or simply enjoy the views from the deck. Keep watch for dolphins and sperm whales along the way, although sightings can never be guaranteed.

Our voyage ends in São Miguel, the largest island in the archipelago. After disembarking, consider staying a few extra days to discover the crater lakes of Sete Cidades, the hot springs of Furnas and the island’s lush landscapes.

  • Terceira Island, one of the most beautiful in the Azores archipelago, is known for its lush nature and stunning landscapes. The Algar do Carvão, an impressive volcanic cave, offers a unique experience with its stalactites and stalagmites, along with an underground lake. Visitors can explore Serra do Cume, which provides panoramic views of the island and its verdant fields. The local culture is rich and lively, reflected in traditional festivals like the Semana do Mar and the colorful houses of Angra do Heroísmo, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The island's cuisine is delightful, featuring the famous bucho recheado, a traditional dish, and freshly grilled fish. With its combination of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and delicious cuisine, Terceira is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the Azores.

The first time we helped the crew put up the sails was magical.

I won't forget the long-suffering patient crew member who taught me to tie a double bowline. It took ages but I finally got it, and was able to teach another passenger.

Plein de moments magiques pendant le voyage. C'était impressionnant de voir le bateau depuis le zodiac quand on se trouvait à environ 50 ou 100 m du navire. Super la baignade en pleine mer.
